As I prepare to chair our first meeting of the year on 18th January 2012, I am looking forward to the challenges of my year as President.
On 30 January 2012 I will be visiting Lewes to chair the Combined Sussex Law Societies meeting. This will be attended by Presidents and other office holders from the Chichester, Worthing, Sussex, Eastbourne, Hastings and Tunbridge Wells Law Societies, as well as regional Law Society representatives.
Amongst subjects for discussion will be the introduction of Alternative Business Structures (ABSs). The first wave of applications have now been made and it is believed that initially 15 or so will be approved. It will be interesting to see how this process develops over the coming months and how the new ABSs impact upon the profession.
Amongst other items on the agenda will be the difficulties over practising certificate renewals this year, the latest proposals from the Legal Ombudsman over publication of complaints and proposed changes to the training structure for Trainee Solicitors.
I will keep you posted on these and other issues through the year.
