Proposed change to membership criteria of the Society

At our committee meeting on 11th September 2012, it was agreed that we would to put forward proposals for opening up the membership of the Society to our members. In light of the changes to the profession brought about by the introduction of alternative business structures, it was felt appropriate that the membership of the Society should be opened up to non-solicitor managers within firms. Many firms within the area already have partners or directors who are not solicitors and we feel that the Society should reflect this changing business environment.

We accordingly agreed at the meeting on 11th September to table a proposal that the Society be opened up to managers within firms, including Fellows of the Institute of Legal Executives and Licenced Conveyancers who are managers within their firms. Those applying for membership will still need to meet the existing criteria, i.e. to live or work within the Chichester and District Law Society area.

A notice has now been sent out to all members of the Society inviting them to attend a Special General Meeting on 30th November 2012. This meeting will take place at 6.30pm at the Alexandra Rooms at Chichester Cathedral. Members of the Society are encouraged to attend the Special General Meeting in order to vote on this proposed change to our constitution.
