Committee Meeting – 19/05/10

Committee Meeting in the Goodwood Room at Thomas Eggar in Chichester.

All committee members present save for Julian Bobak, Caroline De Vries and Edward Cooke.

Consideration given as to the CPD courses and various topics that the speakers will be covering and whether the events may trigger a profit share for the society as income had notably reduced. The programme agreed by both Julian Bobak and Michael Bevis on behalf of the society had included a broader spectrum to promote interest in them. New member applications also approved and further decisions made in relation to establishing the website. The Parliamentary Liaison Officer also reported on progress being made to re-establish the rota for the local MPs to use when faced with a legal problem or issue by a local constituent.

Conference at Chancery Lane

Conference dates: 14/05/10 & 15/05/10
Attended the Presidents’ and Honorary Secretaries’ Conference at Chancery Lane, London. A jam packed two days trying to fit in as much information as possible whilst finding it hard to concentrate! The first day was spent looking at the new proposed regulatory landscape and this included a key note speech and presentation by Elizabeth France, Legal Ombudsman. There was considerable discussion with regard to the target date of 1st October 2011 for alternative business structures. Charles Plant, Chair of the Solicitors Regulation Authority, talked to us about the new changes on the horizon and the SRA’s commitment to try and move more towards assisting solicitors in dealing with the Regulatory code. The second day, a Saturday, proved to be more light hearted with more focus on local law societies and their involvement and channelling lines of communication between them and Chancery Lane. The draft memorandum of understanding was referred to as well as there being an insight into the Law Society Management Board and exactly how the Council operates and what its function is. The Law Society was also plugging their online CPD centre.
