Committee Meeting in the Goodwood Room at Thomas Eggar in Chichester. All committee members present with the exception of Julian Bobak. Again good progress made in discussing ideas and topics for the website and the appointment of “Access by Design”. The position with regard to subscriptions / renewals was considered and organising a social event; namely a Quiz Night. Deciding that this could be combined with trying to change the rules and regulations of the local law society to allow me an opportunity to hold the office of President for 2 years which is not permissible at present. There are also other anomalies that could be altered – i.e. not allowing the immediate past president to be on the committee a year after they have come out of office and needing a large number of members to change the rules!
Local Law Societies Conference 2010 held by Liverpool Law Society at their offices in Liverpool. A truly great event with a number of local law society office holders all with various experiences of being involved in small to medium to large law societies. Came away with loads of ideas and inspiration as well as also feeling that I am not alone in trying to re-vamp the society and try to engage members and get people to work together. Fantastic ideas shared with possibilities of co-operation and involvement with other local law societies, visiting members of the national law society but not members of the local law society to try to increase membership, and consideration of possibly opening up the society to “lawyers” rather than just solicitors to include associated members such as judges, barristers, trainees, ilex/milex/filex. Other ideas included holding more social events such as a local public speaking competition, judges’ forum question time, 5K challenge, spring luncheon and summer balls. Funding from local businesses to sponsor events was probably the most valuable suggestion that I had never even contemplated before.
Judge’s Service at Chichester Cathedral, Chichester.
A real pleasure to be invited by the High Sheriff. Great to see everyone robed up and wearing their wigs and parading around Chichester for all to see. A lovely ceremony attended by a number of legal professionals and other agencies involved in law and the administration of justice.
Worthing Law Society Annual Dinner at the Beach Hotel, Worthing. Invited as a guest on the top table. Really enjoyable affair, great food and nice to see how other societies do things to the extent that firms used it as an opportunity to invite guests/clients rather than all solicitors in the firm. Sat with the Mayor as well as a local MP and ………
